When the Dot NET universal top-level domain extension was initially launched in 1985, along with the first domain name extensions on the Internet, it was intended to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure establishments. Taking into account that there were no special requirements about the usage of the TLD, though, dot NET domains were reserved and used for different purposes and by a lot of people. This extension is a great substitution for dot COM, notably if the desired domain with the latter extension is not free for registration.
